Check their qualifications before any procedure
One of the less-talked-about wonders of the modern age is that cosmetic and plastic surgery, once the preserve of the ultra-rich, is now available to all at a reasonable price. Because it’s not just the rich and famous who like to take pride in their appearance or want to correct defects or the signs of ageing. But with this democratisation of cosmetic surgery comes the risk that a lot of less-than-competent practitioners have also entered the market. So be careful when choosing your surgeon. Check their qualifications before undergoing any medical procedure. You wouldn’t ask a beautician to remove your appendix, would you? So why would you use anything less than a qualified surgeon to change your appearance?
In the UK it is not an easy process to become a cosmetic surgeon. It is unlikely that anyone can qualify to be a cosmetic surgeon before they reach their mid-thirties, as there are many steps and a lot of work required to gain the required qualifications.
Beginning with a five year medical degree followed by a mandatory two-year foundation programme before even beginning to specialise in their chosen field, prospective cosmetic surgeons will realistically be looking at a good fifteen years of training in total before they can set up their own practice. And the requirements for surgeons trained outside the UK but practicing here are very high. Which is, of course, exactly as it should be – remember, you are committing your time, money and physical appearance to your surgeon, so it is vital that they know exactly what they are doing.
Of course, this does little to stop the unscrupulous from taking advantage of the widened market for cosmetic surgery, so it pays to do a little research of your own before making such a big commitment. Which, fortunately, isn’t as hard as it sounds – a decent surgeon will have a verified list of their qualifications readily available for potential customers to ensure that they are in good hands.
Remember, you only have one face and one body – be very careful about who you allow to change them!
